The effect of MESNA (2-mercaptoethane sodium sulfonate) on miringosclerosis: Experimental animal study

Abstract (EN)

Myringosclerosis occurs as a result of hyaline degeneration and calcification of the collagen structure in the lamina propria layer of the tympanic membrane. It can be seen in tympanic membrane damage after myringotomy and ventilation tube applications. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic agents have been tried to prevent the development of myringosclerosis. In our study, MESNA (2-mercaptoethane sodium sulfonate) with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects was used for this purpose. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of MESNA on myringosclerosis in the tympanic membrane. For this purpose, 21 adult guinea pigs were included in the study. Standard myringotomy was performed on the eardrums of the subjects and randomly divided into three groups, with seven guinea pigs in each group. While the first group (Control group) was not treated, the second group (Saline group) was applied topical serum physiological after myringotomy, and the third group (MESNA group) was applied topical MESNA. The subjects were decapitated after the recovery period of fourteen days and their tympanic membranes were dissected for histopathological examination. Histopathologically, tympanic membrane thickness, inflammation and sclerosis; myringosclerosis scoring was done automatically. In our study, there was a decrease in automicroscopic myringosclerosis and histopathological sclerosis in the MESNA group compared to other groups, but this difference was not statistically significant. Histopathologically, inflammation in lamina propria showed a statistically significant decrease in the MESNA group compared to the saline and control group. With these results, we can say that MESNA does not prevent myringosclerosis but only suppress inflammation. Key Words: MESNA, myringosclerosis, myringotomy, antiinflammatory
