Abstract (EN)
Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is defined as the risk cluster which arecomposed of central obesity, increased systemic blood pressure, impaired lipid and glucosemetabolism components. There were some studies in which brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)level of MS patients were reported either as low or high. In this study, we aimed to evaluatethe level of BNP and its correlated factors at MS patients.Materiels-Methods: 108 patients (53 case, 55 diagnostic) who applied to the InternalMedicine and Cardiology Polyclinics of Abant Izzet Baysal University Medical Facultybetween May 2011 and September 2011 were examined in this study. Physical examination, biochemical parameters, and NT-Pro BNP levels of each patient were evaluated.Findings: No difference was found at NT-ProBNP levels of MS patients based on thecontrol group. In our study, we could not locate any correlation between NT-ProBNP andcholesterol, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-K) and waistcircumference. It is determined that NT-proBNP and hemeglobin has a meaningful relation. Conclusion: Although the number of cases are relatively limited in our study, wethink that similarity of both groups? body mass index (BMI) is the primary underlying reasonof why MS and control group?s NT-proBNP level difference could not reach a statisticallymeaningful relation. Since MS is composed of components, and each components havedifferent effects on plasma BNP levels, this may be the reason why the BNP level of MSpatients is not affected.Key words: Amino-terminal Pro-brain Natriuretic Peptide, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular risk.
