Abstract (EN)

Tragedy writers borrowed from the sources they could reach such as mythology, legends, heroic poems and epic poems in the periods they lived in, to create character, theme and plot of their plays. It could be said that mythology is the most demanded source of all. It is widely accepted that as far as content concerned mythology is the most affective mean in giving meaning to and in explaining the essence of life which provides tragedy writers with unlimited opportunities. Especially tragedy writers, using mythologies, which treat the efforts of human beings, to conceive his place in the world universally, put these processes into action through plays and enabled these plays to reach masses from the stage. This work studies The Golden Fleece mythos. The adventures of Medea and İason from the Golden Fleece mythos and how this mythos found new meanings in periods they were written and the functions they served in the hands of Euripides, Seneca, Dario Fo and Yüksel Pazarkaya is revealed. The research and analyses done for this study is based on the scripts containing the validity ?procedures of making women the other? and the situation women go through when they become the other not only in the periods they were written in but also today. Medea as a character is used as a common denominator. The `othering? procedure begins with the oppression from a man; develops with internalization of this oppression by woman; which is followed by the establishment of a system that priorities man and his requests, in other words, pressure to normalize this situation begins. The physical, sexual, and psychological violence Medea goes through as a daughter, woman, wife and a mother and her stand against this othering procedure becomes important. Various othering processes affecting the thought process leading to ?action? based on the othering manner presented in the practical work, through the monologues, displaying the situation of the character concretely form the selected scripts. Thus, in this study not the killing action of Medea but instead the thought process and its reasons leading the action of killing as a theme is emphasized. The afore mentioned playwrights? ?decision? scenes that includes the thought process that leads to killing of her children are gathered with collage method to create a performance text titled ?Medea Or The Other.? While the monologues used in the performance text, studied and staged with the acting styles and fashions of the periods they were written, the changes and transformations they went through since the 5th century B.C. is studied in depth both theoretical and practically. Specific attention is paid during the rehearsals to follow the period?s styles of the scripts. When the styles were similar, especially in considering Euripides and Seneca, the effects of language, expression style and tone are taken into consideration. In another words, the strong characteristics of the scripts and its effect on acting style, moreover, its effect to create the acting style, shaped the acting experiments of this study, for example, it brought out the differences in acting between the Ancient Greek and Roman Periods. What is observed during the practice phase of this study and during the actual performances is that, the use of language, voice, gesture, and posture produces similar meanings in today?s audiences and the period styles, when used in harmony with the script, is still considered contemporary by the present day spectators.
