Abstract (EN)
Invention of the electricity and technological developments eliminated the dependency of the humans to sunlight for everyday activities and changed the rhythm of the metropolitan life. In cities, to cope with traffic problems, caused by the demographic change in the population fast and safe public transportation systems were searched. Metro has arrived as a solution to overcome the traffic problems and it is now frequently used for urban-public transportation. Metro has serious advantages such as reducing the traffic load and carrying large amount of people at one time. Metro stations affect the development of the city. They are dynamic points where the underground activities start. They affect and change their surroundings spatially, socially, and functionally. Kızılay-Batıkent Metro line is a significant current example for Ankara where such dynamic spatial and social changes could be observed. In this study, the effects of Kızılay-Batıkent Metro line and its stations on the spatial and social transformation of the city and its urban image are investigated and documented.
