Glass finds from metropolis lower bath-palaestra

The ancient city of Metropolis, lies on a hill and slopes between Yeniköy and Özbey villages within the borders of Torbalı in Izmir, is a settlement that dominates the Küçük Menderes plain. The glass finds found during the excavations of the Lower Bath-Palaestra complex between 2003-2018 are the subject of this thesis. Considering that the baths in the Roman period were not only for public bathing, but also spaces for cultural and social exchange, with the addition of a palaestra for sports and exercise, tabernas that could be associated with eating and drinking and porticos. The numerous finds made of glass material discovered during the excavations of baths reflects large of use within this social athmosphere. The glass finds found in the Metropolis Lower Bath-Palaestra are dated to a wide range of time from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD, while the glass vase repertoire and glass products show an unity that illuminates the way of use. In this context, glass finds, which have a wide range of use in daily life, were evaluated considering the purpose of use and the places where they were located, the form repertoire was determined and dated, and it was tried to contribute to the architectural works of the building with the detected window glass findings. Archeological data reveal that the bath complex lost its original function in the 4th century AD and was later transformed into a workshop area. When the finds of the glass workshop found in this area were evaluated, it was revealed that not only the extensive glass use , but also production of glass that was operated in the Late Antiquity.
