Determination of professionalism and communication skills by 360 degree evaluation method in pre-graduate medical education

Objective: It is aimed to determine the professionalism and communication skills in medical education by 360-degree evaluation method. Method: 360-degree evaluation method was used in the study. For the intern doctors who were practicing internship in Department of Emergency Medicine, 360-degree evaluation method was used to evaluate intern doctor from team member, peers and patients. 27 questionnaires were filled for each intern doctor. Questionnaires were given in closed envelopes and withdrawn. Results: When data obtained in the study was analyzed, the average score of intern doctors for professionalism and communication skills; for faculty members=4,29, for residents=4,63, for nurses=4,05, for secretaries=3,81, for paramedics=4,19, for patients=4,38 and peer intern doctors=4,57 it was found (Lowest=1, Highest=5). The groups with the highest scores of intern doctors were residents and peer intern doctors. The groups with the lowest scores are secretaries, nurses and paramedics. There was a positive moderate correlation between the scores of the "resident" and "nurses" given to intern doctors (r=0,515; p=0,003<0,05). Between "resident" and "peer intern doctors" a strong positive correlation the scores they gave to intern doctors were found (r=0,620; p=0,000<0,05). There was a positive moderate correlation between the scores given by the "nurses" and "secretaries" to intern doctors (r=0,595; p=0,000<0,05). A positive moderate correlation was found between the scores given by the "nurses" and "paramedics" to intern doctors (r=0,431; p=0,016<0,05). Conclusion: According to the results of the study, it was seen that intern doctors showed professional behaviors at a satisfactory level and that communication with both health care team members and patients was good.
