Abstract (EN)

Sorcery and magic, with a history, dating back to pritimitive people and ancient religions, have always bean more or less effective in all societies throughout history. When sacred boks, literary texts, archaeological excavations, cave paintings were examined, it was seen that this effect had an importance above everything else in the lives of people and communities in ancient times when education, religion, science and technology didin't develop. But today, this effect, when compared to past, has declined as the developments in education, science and technology have clanfied some inexplicable events that we call mysterious and ot the same time, with the help of exploratory and directive knowledge of divine religions wnich are believed to see god as the sole source. Hawever, the field studies we conducted and the data we abtained from these studies show that sorcery and magic cantinue to exist with different names and applications. The fact that the subject of sorcery and magic, which is as old as the history of humanity, engage the attention of many scientist even today and people from all walks of life, who are knowledgeable, uninformed, rich or poor, resort sorcery and magic with different goals and thoughts have led us to work on this subject. The main purpose of our study is to reveal the applicationu and functions of sorcery and magic, which has a history of thousands of years and stil maintains its popularity all over the world, performed in Midyat and its surrounding. In our study, we also included the word meanings of sorcery and magic, definitions of sorcery and magic, types of magic, the history of sorcery and magic, ways of magic and protection from magic, and explanations of termis related to sorcery and magic.
