Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Migraine is a primary headache accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia and photophobia lasting for 4-72 hours in a shooting character localized generally in unilateral and sometimes in bilateral localizations and is frequently observed in young adult women increasing with daily physical activity. It is extremely frequent in societies with Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is a hormone that regulates immune response, endothelial function and cell proliferation as well as carrying anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. There are limited studies in the literature investigating the relation between migraine and Vitamin D. Some of these studies show that there are no relations between Vitamin D and migraine, while some others show that Vitamin D levels are lower in migraine patients. Such studies claim that this situation causes headaches. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enlighten the etiopathogenesis of migraine, which is observed frequently in our country affecting life quality and working life. It is also expected to contribute to its treatment in the future. Material and Method: This study was conducted on 50 patients who were diagnosed with migraine according to ICHD-III Diagnosis Criteria in Inonu University, Turgut Ozal Medicine Center, Neurology Clinic; and on a Control Group consisting of 50 healthy individuals between March 2017-April 2017 in a prospective manner. The serum Vitamin D, PTH, calcium, phosphor, albumin levels of the Patient and Control Group were examined in the scope of the study. Findings: In our study, which compared the vitamin D, PTH, calcium, phosphor, and albumin levels of the Patient and Control Groups, it was determined that calcium and albumin levels were detected to be lower in the patient group when compared with the control group. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of phosphor and parathormone levels. Vitamin D levels were detected to be higher in Migraine Group than the Control Group at a statistically significant level. Result: No relations about the role of 25(OH)D vitamin deficiency in the etiology of migraine were detected in our study. Vitamin D levels were detected to be higher in Migraine Patients. In addition, the calcium and albumin levels were determined as being lower in the migraine patients when compared with the control group. These findings make us consider that, unlike the studies claiming that Vitamin D deficiency might be related with the pathogenesis, high Vitamin D levels might have a role in the pathogenesis of migraine; and moreover, low calcium and albumin levels might be related with migraine.
