Assesment of serum PROBDNF, BDNF and plasminogen levels in migraine

Abstract (EN)

Migraine is a type of headache affects approximately 12% of the population, creates a serious burden of disease, and its etiology is not yet fully understood. There are some theories including genetic predisposition and pathophysiological mechanisms among its causes. BDNF is a molecule that is thought to be important in migraine pathophysiology due to its relationship with CGRP. BDNF is associated with CGRP in trigeminal ganglion neurons. It has been suggested that this association of BDNF and CGRP may play an important role in modulating patients' susceptibility to migraine. The aim of this research was to examine whether there is a difference between serum BDNF, proBDNF, and plasma plasminogen levels in patients diagnosed with migraine and individuals not diagnosed with migraine. Forty-three patients diagnosed with migraine in Düzce University Practice and Research Hospital Neurology Outpatient Clinic constituted the migraine group, and 43 patients without a diagnosis of migraine who applied to other polyclinics of the hospital constituted the control group. The Patient Information Form prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool, and blood samples were taken from the people participating in the research, and the levels of BDNF, ProBDNF and Plasminogen were measured. Descriptive statistics for scale variables were given as mean±standard deviation and median (minimum-maximum), categorical variables were given as numbers and percentages. In the comparative analysis of migraine group and control group, categorical data were analyzed with chi-square test, and measurement values were analyzed with appropriate tests in parametric and nonparametric data. The statistical significance level of p was accepted as p≤0.05. Mean serum levels of BDNF (112.23 ±12.49 pg/ml) and ProBDNF (114.80±21.99 pg/ml) in the migraine group, mean BDNF in the control group (168.04 ±59.48 pg/ml) and ProBDNF (p<0.001, p<0.001). There was no difference between the groups in terms of plasma plasminogen level (p=0.577). It may be thought that the difference in BDNF averages between the groups may be due to the hyperalgesic effect of low doses of BDNF. Keywords: BDNF, Migraine, Plasminogen, proBDNF.
