Occupational health and safety studies in secondary education institutions of the Ministry of National Education: The sample of Çankırı

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Law No. 6331 includes decisions not only about workplaces but also for schools. In schools, the principal is the employer. Employers have a great responsibility for OHS. The study was carried out to examine the OHS studies in the Ministry of National Education (MEB) institutions affiliated to the provincial center of Çankırı. In the descriptive study, survey questions were prepared on the subject. In the questionnaire, questions about sociodemographic characteristics and OHS were asked. In the study, 159 school administrators working in 180 educational institutions were included in the sample. SPSS version 25, descriptive statistics and normality tests were used in the analysis of the data. The majority of school administrators have an OSH board in their schools, an OSH representative, a risk assessment team, warning signs for emergency exits, an alarm warning system, a fire and ventilation system, safety warnings in the laboratory, an ergonomic desk chair, wet decking warning signs, personal protective equipment, anti-slip tape on the stairs, a railing, a safety net between the stairs, a lightning rod, a first aid cabinet, there are fixed cabinets, an emergency exit door, periodic inspections, risk assessment control, an emergency action plan, fire tube maintenance and filling are performed, the emergency exit door is not locked; boiler room security is provided, electrical fuse boxes are locked, there is no security guard, OHS and first aid training is provided; about half of the administrators stated that there are no child locks on the windows; almost all of them are generally cleaned regularly, toilets are cleaned daily.In the study, it was determined that occupational health and safety studies were at a high level in schools where most of the school administrators worked.It was determined by the ANOVA test that there was a difference between the professional working year of the administrators and the OHS board in their school, the OHS risk assessment team, the OHS risk assessment, and the frequency of being an OHS employee representative (p<0.05).In the study, it was concluded that most of the school administrators have a high level of OHS studies in their schools. The study is limited to the province of Çankırı; a comprehensive study is recommended.
