Examination of novels on the National Struggle in terms of values in the social studies curriculum

Abstract (EN)

One of the most important factors that make the life we live in meaningful and direct our behavior is values. Therefore, values constitute the basic building block of a society. Because it is the values that raise the awareness of the societies and gather them on a common denominator. For this reason, an education system free of values is unthinkable. Because countries preserve their national, moral and moral values and transfer them to future generations in order to maintain their unity and solidarity. However, in the globalizing world with the developing technology, people have started to lose their value judgments. Therefore, every nation has started to give importance to values education in their education programs. In this context, the Turkish education system started to give importance to values education by updating the curriculum in 2018 in order to reduce these negative effects. As a matter of fact, the social studies course, which is life itself, is one of the important courses in terms of transferring values. Because the social studies course has undertaken the task of cultural transfer in citizenship education. Because, among the special purposes of social studies are: to help students understand the basic elements and processes that make up Turkish culture and history, to help students recognize and analyze the environment in which they live, to teach students that cultural heritage should be protected and developed by creating national consciousness. Likewise, as citizens of the Republic of Turkey, active citizens who love their homeland and nation, fulfill their responsibilities and have national consciousness are raised. The aim of this study is; It is an examination of four novels about the National Struggle, which does not change the fact that the Turkish nation has lived freely throughout history, in terms of the values included in the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum. In this context, document examination method is used in this research, which is based on four novels belonging to different authors describing the years of the National Struggle. In this direction, Halide Edip Adıvar's "Ateşten Gömlek", Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu's "Yaban" novels, Reşat Nuri Güntekin's "Yeşil Gece" and Mehmet Rauf's "Halas (Kurtuluş)" novels, which reflect those years by serving at the front by serving at the front among the novels describing the National Struggle Period, were selected as data for the research.
