An evaluation on the use of advanced technological methods in the applications of architectural conservation

Technology has been of great significance in the lives of societies since the early periods of histroy. Following the industrial revolution, the technological developments, shaped with scientific studies in the transition process of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, have initiated the use of the term advanced technology. Advanced technological developments have started to be used in various fields of science and industry. Due to technique and software based developments, the use of advanced technologies have dramatically increased in recent years. In this context advanced technolohical methods are widely used in building conservation. Advanced technological methods are used with various techniques and methods in documentation and project studies and architectural conservation practices. Considering the relation between advanced technology and building conservation, some problematics can be seen such as the choice of correct technique in the correct situation, the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques used and their effects on the practice of architectural conservation. To discuss the use of advanced technologies in building conservation practices and their problematics with scientific parameters and perspective, documentation and project studies using advanced technological methods are made on the historical oil mill structure in Germiyan village, Çeşme. Restoration methods for the structure are also discussed. It has been determined that advanced technological methods should be supported by traditional mesurement techniques during the documentation project process in today's technological conditions. In the practice process, it has been observed that some advanced methods can be used alone whereas some can be used accompanied by current methods.
