The use of titanium in architecture

Starting from architectural design, building components are one of the most important elements for designing, constructing, and to remain standing up of buildings. Human being spend tremendous effort for to establish and keep standing up buildings he needs with cooperation of designers, contractors, manufacturers, and users. According to this purpose there is a continuous research for making architectural designs cheap and qualified which is intended.Titanium is the element which can answer this need with its extraordinary physical and chemical characteristics in the modern era. Frank Gehry?s curvilinear design of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, has attracted worldwide attention and using of the material has been broaden all over the world since its opening in October 1998. In this study titanium ?the material used in several countries of the world but not in Turkey, even not well-known in Turkey- is researched.Titanium is defined in the first chapter of this study. In the second chapter, physical and chemical characteristics of titanium are declared and production methods of titanium, products of titanium, and processes are explained. Furthermore using history and areas of titanium are stated in the second chapter.In the third chapter titanium is compared with the other architectural materials and its advantages are stated. Using areas of the material which it has gained many application area in a short time, is classified and using alternatives is explained with sample constructions and details.Even though there a lot of titanium in nature, being expensive of decomposition techniques are constraining using areas. Superb corrosion resistance and slightness and firmness of the material are eliminating use and repair costs. In the fourth chapter cheapness of titanium comparing the other architectural materials is explained with a cost analyze of a sample project in spite of high cost of titanium?s first production.Results of this study are stated in the fifth chapter. Titanium will be the material which can answer needs of designers, users, and operators not only today but also in the future.
