A Research about adatability and up-to-dateness in architechture

Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACTIn this study, a research that can be updated and adopted to architecture is carried out. Theprobability of up-to-dateness and its definition are discussed. Up-to-dateness may be definedas the entire self-developed innovation for recent periods adoptation. If the relation witharchitecture is considered, it is the integration of technological developments with designwithout disturbing the main concept. We can never predict the coming developments. What isnew today is old in the future. Considering these, a research about designing systems that areopen to new developments is examined.The project must be considered as a long-term one since the beginning of it in order todevelop an adaptable and flexible system. The structure of the design should be continuousand also convenient for matching, adapting and arranging in order to maintain itsexistence in the system.Adaptable architecture is finishing a structure with a very plain and simple design and live itopen for future modifications as users? needs. The user will be reflecting his/her choices andway of life to the place and the updatable architecture; therefore will have to renew itselfcontinuously. This idea is similar to a computer program: A CAD program is very differentfrom the times of release for usage. New versions of the programs are put onto the marketaccording to user needs, new technologies and computer systems. Therefore the programmight keep its existence by being adapted to the developed technology. Otherwise it could notfollow the innovations and would become out of use because of lack of need.In architecture, time and economical savings should move parallel to each other. For exampleby taking a look at the confection sector which is renewing itself continuously, we will noticethat shopping is made only to follow fashion trends, even the function is pretty strong. In thesame way, a structure without facing any constructive problems might be abandoned andrestructured just because it became old fashioned. Such a case is always a waste of time andmoney. The point which has to be taken into consideration is that the adaptable and selfupdatable character of the structure should be considered as an alternative and therefore time,effort and money could be saved.In order to make the use and operation of structures simpler ?flexible systems? have alwaysbeen investigated and are applied in today?s technology. Also in this study flexibility conceptwas examined. However the main objective is to investigate the role of flexibility concept inadaptable and updatable architecture.Adaptability is realizing the changes by modifications even if the needs are continuously morethan the expectations. However, since it is difficult to forecast how much and for whatpurpose and additional capacity is required, this might seem to be unrealistic.Adaptibility in building systems relate to long discussed topics such as energy use andsustainability.
