Abstract (EN)

The thesis study which aimed to investigate a integrated flexible building model, is composed of seven chapters. In the fist chapter, the problem is defined, then the aim and the hypothesis of the study is explained. In the second chapter; the concept of change, the effects of technological, environmental and social changes (which are explained as the most important dynamics of change) on the architectural design and manufacturing strategies are explored. Both the environmental, technological and socio-cultural changes resulting from the desire to change spaces, has led to the need for flexibility in buildings. The need for flexibility entails the transition to the flexible building model which extends the life cyle of the buildings, provides adaptability and transformability in buildings. In the third chapter, the research is done on the concept of flexibility. In this research, the historical processes of flexible buildings are explored. The types of flexibility are described in the context of building life cycle. In the fourth chapter; the concepts of flexible building model, sustainability, integration and intelligence in architecture, are investigated. Ecological architecture, biological architecture and life cycle design are classified as sustainable architecture principles and they?re analysed in selected examples. Intelligent design approaches providing integration of the building subsystems and integrated design approaches aiming multidisciplinary studies are analysed in selected examples. Also, the new role of the architect, emerging as a result of systems integration and system design in architecture, is defined in this chapter. In the fifth chapter; adaptable, movable, transformable, interactive building submodels are explored and analysed in selected examples. In the sixth chapter, the projects are evaluated in accordance with the evaluation criterias. According to the evaluation results, it is seen that the submodels complete each other. Then, a new integrated flexible building model is proposed. In the seventh (last) chapter; recommendations on the design parameters of the flexible building model (which is necessary for the sustainable development) are done. The incomplete and inadequate aspects of present building models are explained. Suggestions are made prospectively. In this study; a flexible building model, its submodels, within the framework of the objectives and design strategies have been presented in the context of example projects. The purpose is to suggest decisions for the aim, criteria and strategies of design and manufacturing of flexible building design, and to inform the actors in the contruction sector to guide the flexible building model.Key Words: flexible building design, sustainability, integration, intelligent building, transformability.
