Abstract (EN)
The field of design research continues to be discussed and evolve through literature, discussions, conferences and practices. Particularly, due to the integration of design and digital technologies, the studies in the field have gained momentum both in practice and academia. The field widey used Frayling's symbolic classification which is for art and design research. These revolve around what research is about design, and where it belongs, and summarized in three categories; research into design, research for design, research through design. At the present time when it's considered that a large part of design is computerized, the increasing influence of digital technologies on design research has the potential to reconnect and nest the processes behind design and production. In this context, design research has become a focus in the forefront of digital technologies. In the thesis, the interaction of design research with the digital design and production is studied by paradigm shifts in the process of integration between design and research today, associating the design field with these three categories which are widely used in recent years. First, the concept of design knowledge and design research are defined and approaches of design as first and second generation from researchers perspectives are examined. In the third part, the relationship between design research and digital design and production technologies is categorized by Frayling's design research classification. The scope of each category is explained in detail after the content of the relevant category is identified. Starting with the category of research into design, the scope of design as a discipline is examined in the historical process. In the category of research for design of classification, the effect of digital technologies on design and production is examined through various theories. Since this effect can not be considered independent of the designer, the interaction between designer and digital technologies in this category is also emphasized. In the final and most developed category of classification research through design, new design and research methods that are integrated with digital design and production is examined through integrated examples of research and design. Each part is considered as a design research. Through the study, the digital revolution created by digital technologies which integrates design and research at an transdisciplinary level is discussed and how this integration can be read through the various application examples of products and processes is evaluated.
