The effects of myocardial infarction on posttraumatic growth status, experience and life

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to determine post-traumatic growth status, experiences and effects of trauma on the lives of individuals with myocardial infarction. Posttraumatic growth conditions were evaluated quantitatively in the first stage and myocardial infarction experiences were evaluated qualitatively in the second stage. The study was carried out between August-December 2018 in Başkent University Ankara Hospital, cardiology clinic, coronary intensive care and cardiology department, 86 individuals for the quantitative part and 10 individuals for the qualitative part. The data of the study were collected with "demographic form and descriptive data about health behaviors", "post-traumatic growth inventory" and "semi-structured form". The study included individuals aged 18 years and over, who had had myocardial infarction at least two months ago, had no delirium, dementia or other mental problems, were willing to participate in the study, were able to approve the informed consent form, and had no disability to communicate. The mean score of the participants in the study was 49,95  21,54. According to the working status of individuals working in full-time and half-day or at certain hours of change in the relationship with others sub-dimension mean scores of individuals who were found to be higher than non-working individuals. According to the drug usage patterns of individuals, the mean scores of TSBE, change in relationships with others and change in life philosophy sub-dimension scores of individuals who stated that they use their medication 'always' and 'often' regularly are higher than other individuals. According to the status of individuals exercising düzenli always düzenli regular self-perception sub-dimension of the individuals who stated that they do regular exercise scores are higher than other individuals. According to the status of the individuals who go to the controls regularly, the mean scores of TSBE total score and change in life philosophy and the sub-dimensions of change in relationships with others are higher than the other individuals. As a result of the interviews conducted with individuals who had myocardial infarction, three main themes, emotions, positive effects and negative effects, and 16 sub-themes were obtained. It is recommended that nurses consider the sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviors of post-traumatic growth behaviors of individuals with myocardial infarction.
