Misophonia and psychiatric disorders

Objective: There are studies in the literature that misophonia accompanies many mental disorders and should be considered as a mental disorder. Although there is no clear diagnostic criteria yet, there are suggested diagnostic criteria. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship of misophonia with other mental disorders and to determine its possible place in diagnostic classification systems. Methods: Patients who applied to Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine Balcalı Hospital, Department of Psychiatry and Diseases for the first time and healthy volunteers without a history of psychiatric disease were included in our study. 105 people showing misophonia symptoms formed the patient group, and 158 people showing no misophonia symptoms constituted the control group. In addition to the sociodemographic data form created by us, the Misophonia Interview Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS), Beck Depression Scale (BDS), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (Attentional (BIS-A), Motor (BIS-M), Non-planning (BIS-NP), Total (BIS-T)) and Yale-Brown Obsession Compulsion Rating Scale (YBOCRS) were administered to the participants. Results: The mean BAI score of individuals with misophonia was found to be 25,31, and the mean BAI score of individuals without misophonia was found to be 17,59 (p<0.001). The mean BDI score of individuals with misophonia was 23,02, and the mean BDI score of individuals without misophonia was found to be 17,93 (p=0.003). The mean BAR-D, BAR-M, BAR-P, BAR-T scores of individuals with misophonia were found to be 17,97, 20,54, 26,37, 64,89; the mean BAR-D, BAR-M, BAR-P, BAR-T scores of individuals without misophonia were found to be 15,17, 17,22, 22,85, 55,24 (p<0.001). A significant correlation was found between the Misophonia Symptom List total score and Beck Anxiety Inventory scores of misophonic participants with anxiety disorders. Most of the participants with misophonia were also diagnosed with anxiety disorder. Conclusion: Misophonia is a condition that frequently accompanies mental disorders. The significant increase in the scores of the scale that determines the severity of mental disorders suggests that misophonia may also be a mental disorder. The fact that it most frequently accompanies anxiety disorder and its relationship with anxiety severity makes us think that misophonia should be evaluated under the heading of anxiety disorder in the diagnostic classification. It is thought that knowing misophonia, which frequently accompanies mental disorders, will be known by clinicians and that treatment algorithms will be developed and the patient's quality of life will increase.
