Abstract (EN)

The history of space is as old as the history of humanity, because it is man himself who defines and categorizes it. Since these definitions are based on relations with space, they limit human existence to the existence of space. The relationship of man with space is categorized in terms of socio-cultural as well as gender. In this context, men are subjects of public and women are subjects of private space. The woman must organize the interiors that represent the private space and fill the space with her feminine presence. This point of view, which has become a norm especially in patriarchal societies, accepts women and interior space as an inseparable whole and reduces women to their presence in the interior. The relationship of women with interior space has been a subject encountered and questioned in every period of art history. In the interior paintings, in which the social position of women is discussed through the duties of women, the aesthetics and privacy of the woman's body, the perspective of the period on women is revealed either implicitly or explicitly. The function of the private space with which the female figure is associated and the figures and objects with which it is handled turn into data that reflect both social position and mood. The art of painting, which presents all these relations, conveys the views on the woman-space relationship to the audience through individual expressions, while revealing the historical development of the woman-indoor relationship. The aim of the thesis text, which was created within the scope of this main idea, is to define the concepts of the relationship of women with the interior, to analyze the paintings that can serve as an example for the subject in question, and to support the research topic with the artwork text.
