Mari̇mekko: A phenomenon i̇n the hi̇story of fi̇nni̇sh modern texti̇le desi̇gn

Scandinavian design has an important place in the history of textile printing design with its unique and extraordinary approach. Marimekko, which draws attention with its outline of the classical design concept that continued until the 1950s, has proven itself in a short time and has become a worldwide brand. The most important factor that leads to this success is that it draws a line to ordinary design and gives a new perspective to design. In the first part of the thesis, the general characteristics of Scandinavian design, which plays an active role in the history of world design, is given. The history of Scandinavian design, especially textile printing design, was particularly emphasized and the design examples were supported by visuals. In the second part, a detailed academic research has not been done in our country on Marimekko brand which is a Finnish design school. In this respect, the main purpose of our research is to reveal the place of Marimekko brand in the history of textile printing, historical development and branding process, design philosophy, product types, designs and designers with visuals in Scandinavian design history. In the third part of this study, the Marimekko brand that creates successful designs based on its own culture, was taken as an example, and the design elements such as point, line, color, shape were used to design the stinging nettle, common st john's wort, green tea, immortelle, blueberry and arctium lappa. Finally, it is aimed to create original print design works by synthesizing by these basic design elements.
