The alienation problem in modern architecture; the films of Jacques Tati

In this thesis Jacques Tati?s films ( 1907-1982) are the subject of study. Tati is a director who focuses predominantly on urban and architectural issues in his films. Especially modern architecture, modern city created by modern architecture and the experiences of the users of these places under critical scrunity are the main themes in Tati?s films. Jacques Tati tries to transfer the individual, social and spatial reflections of the consept of modernity through his films. The thesis constructs its theoretical framework through the concepts of modernity, modern architecture and alienation and it reads the films with in this conceptual framework.Tati?s perception of modern architecture, the alienation of the modern individual and the individuals who can not adjust themselves to the condition of modernity or can not be trained through this `new? way of life and modern architecture are discussed. Tati used modern design products as a tool in his films to depict these individuals who can not be educated. There are some explanations of pre-modern life styles in his films. Tati?s usage of architecture as a tool in his films brings the disciplines of cinema and architecture closer to one another in terms of cities, buildings, inner spaces and objects.Tati is a man of cinema who uses the camera like an architect. He writes his own manifesto for the modern architecture and makes us watch. According to Tati, it?s not modernizm itself, it?s the implementation of modernizm that is problematic. For this reason, Tati can be helpful for the dicipline of architecture to understand everyday life via Tati?s film; modern dwellings, the city and the alienated people.Key Words : Modernism, Cinema, Space, Alienation, Cinema Architecture
