Abstract (EN)
In this study, titled "Prominent Critics and Critical Methods in Modern Egyptian Arabic Literature," we examine the prominent critics and critical methods in Egypt in the modern period. The critics included in our study are; Husayn al-Marsafī, Mustafa Sādiq al-Rāfiī, Ahmad Dayf, Ibrahim Abdul Qādir al-Māzinī, Muhammad Husayn Haykal, Abdurrahmān Shukrī, Abbās Mahmoud al-Aqqād, Muhammad Mandūr, Sayyid Qutb, Tāhā Husayn, Rashad Rushdī, Louis Awad, Yahyā Haqqī, Izz al-Dīn Ismail and Salāh Fadl. The methods analyzed include the historical, sociological, ideological, psychological, and psychoanalytic methots, as well as New Criticism, structural criticism, and impressionistic criticism methods. Drawing on examples from the works of Egyptian critics, the study highlights the limitations of these methods. Additionally, it underscores the synthesis-oriented and pluralistic approaches adopted by Egyptian critics in their critical methodologies. In this study, we aim to identify the factors influencing the methodological tendencies of modern Egyptian critics. These factors are categorized into two groups: "individual-related factors" and "work-related factors." Within the scope of critic-related factors, the study addresses elements such as "educational background," "attitudinal differences regarding tradition and innovation," "artistic perspectives," and "the critics' objectives and target audience." Regarding work-related factors, the study examines the "literary genre" and the "content of the literary work." We can say that the works of modern Egyptian critics stand out for their methodological diversity. The limitations of critical methods have led critics such as Taha Hussein and Sayyid Qutb to adopt a synthetic approach. Salâh Fadl, on the other hand, has employed a pluralistic approach when evaluating literary works, aiming to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of various methodologies.
