The purification of self from the perspective of modern psychological approaches

.The purification of self in sufism, one of the research area of psychology of religion, was studied according to the perspectives of modern pshycological approaches: psychoanalytic, analytic, humanistic, transpersonal in this study. Therefore the processes of purification, repentation, annihilation, continuance, to reach the stage of perfect man and the practices of purification asceticism, renunciation, invocation, contemplation, the relationship of master and disciple, sufi stories, dream, connection, self criticism and self observation were analyzed according to these modern psychological approaches. As this study is especially based on the literature of sufi psychology in the West recently, the answer was searched for the question 'How is the sufi tradition analyzed according to the perspective of psychology in the sources of the West?'. With the analysis of the processes and practices according to perspectives of psychology, It is aimed to introduce that the purification of self is a psychological and psychotheraputic processes as it causes the actualization of self by the raising the awareness and consciousness and the development and transfromation of personality. It has been aimed to contribute with this theoratical study based on the literature of sufi psychology in the West recently to the literature of sufi psychology and the psychology of religion. With the informations obtained from the the literature of sufi psychology, the purification of self was analyzed according to modern psychological approaches. With the explanation method, the processes and practices of sufism based on a faith and philosophy were analyzed without reduction to psychology and physiology. As a result, it was concluded with this study that the purification of self is a psychological and psychotheraputic processes as it causes the actualization of self by the raising the awareness and consciousness and the development and transfromation of personality.
