Anxiety as a philosophical concept in modern Turkish poetry (1860-1896)

In this study, poems of first and second generation poets of Tanzimat Period are evaluated in terms of anxiety concept. Anxiety was not seen as a simple concept by existentialists who first addressed it. For them, the anxiety in the centre of existence is the result of being human, and it is connected with many concepts such as nonentity, death, time, moment, sin, eternity, freedom, possibility, spirit, nonexistence, uncertainty, and other human conditions. In this respect, in the first part of the study, conceptual researches were carried out; and the concepts with which the anxiety was confused and connected were also accentuated. In addition, the relationship between literature and philosophy, the boundaries of two areas, similar and different aspects of them, literature and existentialism, and ultimately the topics of poetry and anxiety were discussed as titles in detail. After this section, poetry evaluations were started. In the first chapter, the poems of Şinasi, Nâmık Kemal and Ziyâ Paşa were examined in terms of anxiety and concepts connected with it. "Adem Kasidesi" of Akif Paşa, showing the path to reach existence through the anxiety of nonexistence, was also included in the study. In the third chapter, the poems of Recâizâde Mahmut Ekrem and Abdülhak Hâmid Tarhan were emphasized. Both poets have more poems than their predecessors. Especially those owned by Abdülhak Hâmid are more diverse with regard to topics. In this respect, the third chapter became more comprehensive; and the poems were evaluated after being divided into sub-headings. Keywords
