Memory building and compassion fatigue in the context of the concepts of modernism and photojournalism

This thesis is to express with examples that the photo that creates memory building by creating social memory and consciousness is strong enough to mobilize public opinion and as a result of today's new media movement with post-modernism media movements. It aims to reveal that image bombardment interferes with the construction of social consciousness, leading to cultural amnesia and compassion fatigue. In addition, the thesis is evaluated within the framework of the examples in this field that the consumption-based system of modernism manifests itself in monumental spaces as well as in the new media. Images that are continuously provided in a continuous flow with modernism cause normalization as a result of the stacking in memory. In this sense, monumental spaces and information visuals, which increase visibility in line with commercial purposes, first create collective memory with memory building and then lead to cultural amnesia by forgetting this system. The processes of getting used and normalization at risk compassion fatigue, in this sense, the result of two opposing effects that remind and forget. Photographs involving social events and wars that have public influences also create pornography of violence. These photos, which include blood, death, violence, create a virtual perception of reality in the sensation-oriented information transmission of the new media, make the viewer a voyeuristic position, causing insensitivity and pain to normalize. The thesis focuses on the normalization of pain in the audience, what effect it has on reporters who experience events one-on-one. Modernism's new information-driven new media system leads to reporters being exposed to more traumatic events and a chance of experiencing compassion fatigue. In this sense, the thesis has tried to draw attention to the risk of experiencing compassion fatigue by reporters who transmit information within the framework of ethical responsibilities and professional obligations of image bombardment, which is a return of post-modernist media. Accordingly, 11 war reporters working in domestic and foreign (Coşkun Aral, Christopher Morris, Can Ertuna, Bünyamin Aygün, Felat Bozarslan, Greg Marinovich, Güray Ervin, Kenan Yeşilyurt, Murad Sezer, Paul Hansen, Onur Çoban), written/visual media, face-to-face, telephone and e-mail, using criteria sampling from sample methods for purposes, semi-structured personal interviews were conducted. The compassion fatigue experienced by the reporters, the answers to the interviews were tried to be evaluated in particular and the purpose of diagnosing was not intended.
