Abstract (EN)
Granular activated carbone (GAC) filters are the largest sources of microbial contamination in pre-treatment units of water preparation for hemodialysis. In this study, it was aimed that reduce microbial pollution in GAC by using modified GAC loaded with silver oxide and copper oxide particles. The modified GAC which have antimicrobial activity was investigated for chlorine removal. After silver and copper oxide particles are synthesized by various chemical methods, they are attached to the surface of GAC. The pore and surface properties of the modified granular activated carbon were investigated by SEM, EDX, FT-IR and BET analyzes. The pH, free and total chlorine, hardness, conductivity, microbial contamination and amount of endotoxin were monitored from the inlet and outlet points of the modified and unmodified activated carbons. At the end of this study, it was determined that microbial growth reduces about 68%, 83%, 64%, 75% in GAC containing 0.04% AgO, %1 AgO %3 CuO and %5 CuO, respectively. The GAC containing 5% copper oxide, endotoxin release was reduced by 44% compared to unmodified GAC filter.
