Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACTIn the present, at the point that machining technology has reached, tool wear is one of the mainproblems. The wear which occurs in cutting tools causes loss of labor and time, howeverdimension and surface sensitivity of work piece is affected significantly cause of wear. So lots ofinvestigations was made to estimate tool wear before occur and to lengthen tool life.In this study, wear process and cutting forces of cutting tools whose surfaces had been modifiedby using Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PI3) were investigated. In this purpose, N2 and Cions had been implanted to cutting tools by PI3 at Australian Nuclear Science and TechnologyOrganization. The cutting tests were performed in accordance to ISO 3685 and in the conditionsof 0,3 mm/rev feedrate, 2mm cutting depth, 180-240-300 m/min cutting speed. As work piece,AISI 4140 steel was used in dimensions of Ø120 x 300mm. In the force measurements, a strain-gauge based dynamometer was designed and produced to measure main cutting force (Fc) andfeed force (Fa).In the result of investigations, it was observed that tool life of cutting tools whose surfaces hadbeen modified by PI3 increased and cutting forces decreased when cutting speed increased.
