Investigation of usability of compacted liners obtained by modified fly ash in solid waste landfill

Abstract (EN)

Solid waste landfills are important engineering structures for protection of wastes,decrease of environmental pollution, and especially prevention of soil and water pollution. In this context, the purpose of the engineer who designed the plant is to carry out adequate and healthy waste storage at an affordable cost, while for the environment the aim is not to cause pollution to the plant. The leachate and groundwater to prevent the liquid waste from solid waste, most of the bottom of the storage area is possible by being comprised of a liner material. Due to their low permeability properties, the main materials used in solid waste storage areas are geosynthetic clay liner and compacted clay liner. Fly ash, which is a thermal power plant waste, is used in the construction of impermeable liners to evaluate the waste and produce desired impermeable liners. In this study, it was investigated the usability of C class fly ash impervious liner modified with surfactant. After the studies published in the related literature have been examined and evaluated, consistency limits, composition and hydraulic conductivity tests have been carried out in the laboratory. Also modified fly ash and used fly ash were imaged using SEM. The study was carried out on fly ash and bentonite prepared by modifying different concentrations (10%, 15%, 20%) of the C class fly ash, C fly ash with different surface active materials (SLES, LABSA). As a result of the tests conducted, it has been pointed out that it is not suitable to use as a compressed liner in solid waste disposal sites because the hydraulic conductivity values of the fly ash and modified fly ash are higher than the Turkish Solid Waste Control Regulation and US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) limit values. However, it has been shown that the modified fly ash can be used in the production of geosynthetic liner. Furthermore, in the hydraulic conductivity tests on bentonite, the permeability coefficient was found to be less than the Turkish Solid Waste Control Regulation and US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) limit values.
