Critical edition and analysis of Molla Halil es-Sâîrdî's work al-Manzumat al-Zumurrudiyya

This study focuses on the critical edition and analysis of al-Manẓūmat al-Zumurrudiyya, a work on Arabic rhetoric authored by Molla Halil al-Siʿirdī, one of the prominent scholars of the late Ottoman period. The treatise, written in poetic form, addresses the disciplines of bayân and badîʿ, and is regarded as a rare educational text in the field of classical Arabic rhetoric. Accordingly, the main objective of this thesis is to produce a scholarly critical edition of the text and to provide a comparative content analysis in relation to major classical rhetorical sources. The thesis begins with a detailed examination of the author's biography, scholarly identity, and works. It then investigates the sources, methodology, content, and manuscript tradition of al-Manẓūmat al-Zumurrudiyya, followed by the implementation of the critical edition process. The study reveals that the work is not a direct versification of a single classical text; rather, it is an original compilation primarily based on Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ and other classical sources. Furthermore, Qur'anic verses, prophetic traditions, poetry, and proverbs cited in the text have been sourced and analyzed; the literary devices within the verses have been examined to uncover the author's rhetorical approach. During the critical edition, special attention was given to the poem's metrical structure and prosodic coherence, and necessary editorial adjustments were made in accordance with classical vocalization principles. Additionally, the place of the work within the classical rhetorical tradition has been reassessed, and certain naming inaccuracies in the literature have been corrected. This study contributes both to the preservation of Molla Halil's scholarly legacy and to the academic understanding of the pedagogical and methodological aspects of classical rhetorical texts. Moreover, through this work, al-Manẓūmat al-Zumurrudiyya has been critically edited for the first time according to academic standards and introduced into scholarly literature.
