Abstract (EN)

Sleeve gastrectomy is the most common surgical procedure in the treatment of morbid obesity. It is known that mental status and psychological factors of patients affect postoperative weight loss. Studies investigating the effect of psychological factors have focused on anxiety, depression and have shown that these factors were associated with postoperative weight loss. Studies conducted over the last 10 years have revealed that catastrophization of pain is a component associated with anxiety and depression. Based on this relationship, we hypothesized that pain catastrophization level can predict postoperative outcomes such as pain, analgesic consumption and weight loss in sleeve gastrectomy patients. Eighty patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy were included in the study. The patients were asked to complete the Pain Catastrophization Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale and Beck Depression Scale forms before the operation. In the early postoperative period, the patients' pain was measured according to the Numeric Rating Scale and the excess weight lost by the patients at 6 months was noted. The relationship between pain catastrophization scale and postoperative pain was investigated. The relationship between the Pain Castastrophization Scale, Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety Scale and excess weight loss was investigated. There was a negative correlation between the Pain Castastrophising Scale score measured in the preoperative period and excess weight loss in the 6 th postoperative month. The mean weight loss of the group with low catastrophization level was 77.68 ± 14.97 and the mean of the group with high catastrophization was found to be 69.74 ± 19.53 and these values were statistically significant (p = 0.048). As Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety Scale scores increased, weight loss decreased (p = 0.012), (p = 0.005). The relationship between postoperative pain levels and Pain Catastrophization Score was statistically significant (p <0.001). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the Pain Catastrophising Scale score predicts, postoperative pain level, analgesics consumption and the weight loss associated with sleeve gastrectomy operation.
