Investigation of the effect of metal oxide and hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticle additives to engine oils on tribological behavior of aluminum alloys

Abstract (EN)

In order to ensure optimum performance in moving mechanical systems, minimizing energy losses in the system has an important place. One of the main factors causing energy loss in moving systems is friction. In order to have a good level of energy efficiency during friction, the lubrication mechanism must exhibit ideal properties. Lubricants form a protective liquid film between moving parts, preventing them from being damaged by friction to some extent. By improving the properties of lubricants, damage caused by friction can be reduced to minimum levels. One of the most effective and efficient methods to improve the properties of lubricants is to add nanomaterials to lubricants. In this study, Al 6013 aluminum alloy pin-on-disk wear tester was used under different wear conditions (dry, engine oil only, 10% TiO2 nano-additive oil by weight, 7.5% TiO2 by weight and 2.5% h-BN nano doped oil by weight, 5% TiO2 by weight). and 5 wt% h-BN nano doped oil, 2.5 wt% TiO2 and 7.5 wt% h-BN nano doped oil, 10 wt% h-BN nano doped oil) and abraded at different loads (10 N, 30 N and 50 N). 5W-30 engine oil was used as oil. Wear tests were carried out at a sliding speed of 100 mm/s and a sliding distance of 350 m. As a result of the experiments, weight losses in aluminum parts under different conditions and loads were measured. It was seen that the nanoparticles used in the experiments improved wear and friction. The lowest average friction coefficient under a load of 10 N was obtained in the experiment with 2.5% TiO2 by weight and 7.5% h-BN nano doped oil by weight. The lowest average friction coefficient under 30 N and 50 N loads was obtained in experiments conducted only with engine oil. It was determined that wear loss increased as the load increased. As a result of the wear tests, when all lubrication conditions were compared, the best values in terms of wear loss were obtained in the experiments carried out with a mixture of 5% TiO2 by weight and 5% h-BN nano doped oil by weight.
