Analysis of virchow-robin spaces in epilepsy patients by mri

Abstract (EN)

The reason for our VRB study in epilepsy patients is that we aim to recommend increased VRB count as an option in diagnosis or confirmation, defined as neurogenic inflammation (vasodilatation and increased vascular permeability) in epilepsy. The counts were taken from cross-sections of MRIs containing white matter of the brain, basal ganglia and hippocampus, because of the better technical ability to visualize VRB based on the study of Zhang et al. A total of 113 patients (58 females, 55 males) aged 18-65 years who were admitted to the Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Afyon Health Sciences University Medical Faculty with MRI and diagnosed as epilepsy were included in this study. A control group of 87 (47 females, 40 males) aged between -65 years was included. Patient and control groups were divided into 4 different age groups as 18-30, 31-40, 41-50 and 51-65 years. In our study, basal ganglia, white matter and hippocampus levels were evaluated separately in the patient and control groups in epilepsy patients, and statistically significant difference was found in the 3 groups. In our study, when the female patient and the control group and the male patient and the control group were evaluated independently, they In comparison with gender, more dVRB was detected in favor of patient group at 3 levels. In female and male patient groups, the number of dVRBs increased with age at 3 levels. In female and male control groups, the number of dVRBs increased with age at 3 levels, but this was not statistically significant. In the light of this information, our study showed parallelism with the literature. Future studies are needed to confirm the cause-effect relationship between epilepsy and dVRB. Since pathological studies on dVRB are very few and limited, histopathological studies are needed to take into account the regional differences in dVRB risk factors. Our study may guide clinicians in the diagnosis of epilepsy. Moreover, we believe that positive results can be obtained in the treatment of epilepsy when the connection between epilepsy and dVRB is supported by pathogenetic studies.
