The image of II. Abdulhamid Khan in the poems of Egyptian neoclassicist poets

In poems, an image is a tool that allows us to recognize the inner world of the poet or a reality that the poet reshapes and gives meaning to depending on many agents such as belief and culture. As a sub-branch of Comparative Literature, Imagology is a science that emerged by searching "the self" in the eyes of the "the other" nations by searching in their literature. The primary purpose of the research is to investigate the image of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, II. Abdulhamid Khan. The secondary aim of our research is to examine the styles and features of the Neo-classical movement, which is the productive movement of the image, through comparison. The Egyptian poets whose poems were researched are Bārūdī's students Ahmad Shawqī, Ahmad Nasīm, Hāfiz Ibrāhīm Ismāīl Sabrī, Muhammad Abd al-Muttalib and Waly al-dīn Yakan. These poets, who were followers of Islamic classical poetry, but managed to go beyond imitation and used their poems as a means of strengthening their identities and rebelling against colonialism, were pioneers in renewing and reviving the declarative aspect and content of poems. In addition to this, neo-classical poets have left their mark in the history of Arabic literature with their poems that have been accepted by the public. The significance of the person we are researching in history, the fact that the movement is a basic movement for Modern Arabic Literature, and the poets being researched are pioneers reveal the importance of the research. The fact that mentioned poets and Abdulhamid Khan lived in the same period will reveal the image of Abdulhamid not only in the eyes of the poets but also Egypt with this study. In addition, the fact that the image of Abdulhamid Khan has not been investigated before in poems produced in Arab geographies before increases the importance of thise research. The method of the study is a multiple analysis method, which is a qualitative research method suitable for its purpose. After data scanning, the poems were translated into Turkish. In this analysis method, non-textual elements such as the lives of the poets and the historical and social context were taken into account. In the first part of the thesis, the non-textual elements like the time and place of the image, the neoclassicist movement and poets that revealed the image were examined. In the second part, firstly, the related poems and their translations were given. Afterwards, the images in the poems were examined in partial and general terms.
