Muḥammad Abū al-Zahrā's interpratation of the verses of aḥkām in his tafsīr titled Zahrāt al-Tafāsīr

Muḥammad Abū Zahra's tafsīr entitled Zahrat al-Tafāsir is in its essence not considered to be an aḥkām tafsīr. However, the fact that Abū Zahra is specialized in fiqh makes it necessary to lay out the method that he has adopted in his approach to the aḥkām verses. Due to its author's passing away before completing the commentary, it covers only the chapters of the Qurʾān until the chapter of al-Naml. Therefore, the present work tries to present his views and methods within the scope of the chapters of the Qurʾān until the chapter of al-Naml. The present work consists of one introductory and two main chapters. The introductory chapter provides information on the aim, importance, method, and the sources of the study. The first chapter is dedicated to Muḥammad Abū Zahra's life and legacy as a scholar, his tafsīr titled Zahrat al-Tafāsir as well as his method of tafsīr. The second chapter examines, under headings, the particular verses we have detected that the author has provided with a legal ruling (ḥukm) on. This study shows that Abū al-Zahra makes an effort to comment on the Qurʾān based on the Qurʾān itself and the Sunna of the Prophet. As for his own views on the verses of aḥkām, the study also reveals, he tries to present them without overlooking the views of maḏāhib (the İslâmic legal schools). In this regard, his work shows characteristics of riwāya and dirāya type of commentary. Moreover, Abū Zahra does not neglect to explain the wisdom behind the findings of his analysis of the verses that he comments on, and he examines the legal rulings within a cause and effect relationship.
