The works of Muhammad Ibnu's-Sid al-Batalyawsi and his ‎place in Arabic literature

Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawsi (d. 521/1127) was a distinguished scholar who lived ‎during the period of the Muluk al-Tawa'if (1031–1090), a time when al-Andalus was ‎experiencing political instability but also a remarkable flourishing of intellectual life. ‎He was a versatile figure with scholarly interests spanning various disciplines such as ‎language, grammar, literature, philosophy, jurisprudence, hadith, theology, and logic. ‎Through both his original works and his commentaries, he earned a prominent place in ‎the intellectual history of al-Andalus. Later scholars often referred to him with epithets ‎such as "the Maʿarri of al-Andalus," "the Kindī of al-Andalus," or "the Jāḥiẓ of al-‎Andalus," highlighting his intellectual stature. He has been the subject of many ‎academic studies in the Arab world, and his name appears in nearly all biographical ‎dictionaries that document the lives of Andalusian scholars. He is frequently praised ‎for his scholarly contributions, and many of his works have been edited and published.‎ In contrast, scholarly interest in Ibn al-Sid al-Batalyawsi within Turkey has ‎focused primarily on his philosophical thought, while his contributions to Arabic ‎literature remain relatively underexplored. This study aims to examine his life, his ‎works—particularly those related to Arabic language and literature—and his scholarly ‎identity, in order to reassess his place in the classical Arabic literary tradition and to ‎contribute to making his literary legacy more visible.‎ This study aims to examine the life, works, and intellectual personality of Ibn al-‎Sīd al-‎Baṭalyawsī, with a particular focus on his contributions to Arabic literature.‎
