Abstract (EN)

Intensified studies have been performed regarding the sintering of alumina since 1960. Inthese studies, mainly the mechanism of sintering, its kinetics and the effects of additivesubstances were sought. As a consequence, in order to contribute the studies about this issueand to acquire new datas, we have sought the effects of different additives on the density, strength, shrinkage behavior and microstructure of alumina, which is in metallurgical qualityand produced at Seydişehir ET Aluminium Plants. So as to examine the effects of additivessuch as Cr2O3, TiO2 and MgO, rectangular samples prepared from pure and additive aluminapowder via dry pressing method and shaped under a pressure of 40 MPa were used. Theobtained samples were sintered with a speed of 7 oC/min. at 1500 oC, 1550 oC, 1600 oC and1650 oC with two-hour intervals. In the result of the characterization of the sintered samples, it has been found that; The additive TiO2 yields the grain growth further in the microstructure and increases•the density and strength of pure alumina,Cr2O3 prevents the grain growth and forms a homogeneous structure,•MgO makes less contribution to the heterogeneous grain growth in the microstructure•and the best results were obtained with 0,1 % additive content.2006, 77 pagesKey words: Alumina, sintering behavior, additives, MgO, TiO2, Cr2O3, Seydişehir Alumina
