Poverty experiences of high school refugee students: A case study in Eskisehir

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is to reveal the multidimensional poverty experiences of refugee high school students who came to Turkey with forced migration and settled in Eskişehir and studied in different types of high schools, the problems they experienced due to poverty and what kind of strategies they resorted to to cope with poverty. In this study, which was prepared with the explanatory sequential design of the mixed method, 976 refugee students who came from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran and studied in different types of high schools in the city center of Eskişehir constitute the study universe. For the determination of sample groups; In the quantitative dimension, the simple random sampling method, and in the qualitative dimension, the criterion and maximum variation sampling methods of the purposive sampling method were used. In this context, 276 refugee students in quantitative dimensions; 27 refugee students constitute the qualitative sample. A questionnaire consisting of 87 questions to collect the data; A semi-structured interview form with 43 questions was used for in-depth interviews. Descriptive statistical analyzes with SPSS data analysis program for quantitative data; descriptive analysis and content analysis were carried out in the qualitative dimension. As a result of the analyzes, refugee high school students' housing, consumption, education, meeting personal needs, participation, free time, technology, social relations, health, etc. It has been determined that they experience a multidimensional poverty in areas such as It has been seen that most of them are rented, and some of them work outside school hours such as waitresses, cardboard collectors, hairdressers and butcher's apprentices, busboys and marketing. In addition, it was stated that the participants spent more time with their families outside of school hours; It has also been reached that they do not prefer to participate in leisure time activities. Finally, some of the participants resorted to strategies to cope with transnational poverty through transnational migrant networks and sought various assistance; it has been determined that this keeps transnational altruism and networks alive among refugees with the same country of origin.
