Analysis of the concepts in the life unit in our country with the word association test

In this study, which aims to examine the perceptions of refugee students regarding the concepts included in the Life Science lesson, the word association test was used. Based on the life knowledge gains of refugee students, the perceptions of the concepts determined as key words were tried to be determined by the case science pattern based on qualitative research. The criteria related to the purposeful sampling method of the working group were determined as sampling. in 2021-2022, 92 refugee students studying in the second and third grades of Atatürk, Ebulula, Elif Ana Mehmet Çöşek and Cumhuriyet Primary Schools in Artuklu district of Mardin Province formed the study group of the research. The data of the study were obtained by word association test, and the keywords were created based on the achievements in the "Life in Our Country" unit of the "Knowledge of Life" course. The keywords determined as a result of the examination of the achievements are Turkish Flag, Turkey, National Anthem, Ataturk, National Unity and Togetherness, Migration and Cultural Heritage. The obtained data were evaluated by content analysis. According to the findings obtained, the most association was made towards the key concept of the Turkish Flag. The most common associations related to key concepts are red and star related to the Turkish Flag, beautiful related to Turkey, Mehmet Akif Ersoy related to the National Anthem, bayram related to Ataturk, family and strength related to National Unity and Togetherness, Syria related to migration and loss, and Syria related to cultural heritage. It seems that the most perceived concept of the unit of life in our country is the Turkish flag, followed by the National Anthem and the key concepts of Ataturk, National Unity and Togetherness, migration, respectively. The least related concept is cultural heritage.
