Experiences of, and problems faced by, service providers working with refugees: The Istanbul cade

This thesis aims to evaluate the basic human rights knowledge of service providers working in the public sector and non-governmental organizations, as well as to reveal their perspectives on service recipients, the difficulties they encounter while doing their jobs and their experiences. In this study, it has been investigated that the difficulties faced by the service providers working in the field of migration and refugees in the field, how they cope with their own traumatic experiences, whether the services provided are sufficient, how much human rights knowledge is based on in their busy work Schedule and how this knowledge is reflected in their professional lives. In this thesis, Kuçuradi's view of human rights is taken as a basis, the principles aiming to protect the value of human beings are expressed, and the evaluation of human rights violations they have encountered in the field service providers is discussed in this direction. In the study, it was decided to conduct a study in different regions throughout Istanbul in order to find out the dynamics of the professions of the service providers who have been trained in different disciplines, and that there are service providers who are actively working in various non-governmental organizations and public institutions in regions where Syrians under temporary protection are concentrated. In the research, the participants were reached by snowball method using the in-depth interview technique of the qualitative research method, and interviews were conducted with 28 service providers working with refugees. In the working group, 15 participants were from the public sector and 13 participants were service providers working in various non-governmental organizations. In the research, it was found that the participants experienced secondary traumatic stress due to being exposed to the experiences of traumatised people and the lack of a regular supervision system, and described the field they work in as a difficult field. It has been observed that service providers try to provide services regardless of their legal status, but some of them are affected by current and political debates especially on Syrians, they have difficulty in naming their work and the situation created by conceptualisation emerges as uncertainty. However, it has been found that the violations that service providers have encountered in the field are mostly violations arising from the legislation, and that the bureaucratic obstacles that come before them violate basic human rights. Other findings are that some service providers in the field have prejudiced attitudes and discourses towards refugees, and some of them do not pay attention to the sensitivity of the group they work with.Another issue that emerged in the study was the finding that supervision for service providers is an important deficiency and need. Based on the determination that service providers working in the field of migration and refugees have important roles in the field, this research aims to contribute to the literature by addressing how they handle human rights knowledge in their work and what are the difficulties they face with their experiences in the field.
