Vitamin d receptor level in multinodular goiter tissue and papillary thyroid cancer

Thyroid carcinoma is the most common malignant endocrine tumours and accounts for approximately 1% of all cancers and about 0.2% of cancer-related deaths. In addition to the conventional effect of vitamin D on bone turnover and calcium metabolism, antiproliferative and therapeutic effects are observed in differentiated cancers such as thyroid cancer. The goal of this study is to evaluate the VDR expression using immunohistochemistry method in normal thyroid tissue, papillary thyroid cancer tissues and multinodular goiter tissue and to compare the results. Between year of 2000 and 2014 at Fırat University Hospital ENT Clinic years, 30 patients, aged 20-60, who underwent thyroidectomy, reported as pathologically papillary thyroid carcinoma and other 30 reported as goitre nodules are included in this research. The control group is composed of by obtaining normal thyroid tissue confirmed as a result of pathological examination of 30 bodies autopsy, in which macroscopic lesions are not detected; the autopsies carried out on bodies aged 20-60 and conducted at Elazığ Education and Research Hospital, Department of Forensic Medicine. Primary monoclonal antibody was performed immunohistochemistry enhanced against VDR in all resulting tissue sections. after sections were stained immunohistochemically with VDR antibodies, all those specimens staining were evaluated by a pathologist expert semiquantatively. If there is no staining or when staining is less than 10% (0), if there is mild staining (+) (10-30% cells staining), if there is moderate staining (++) (% 31-60 cells staining) and if there is significant staining (+++) (> 60% cells staining), points were evaluated accordingly. In this study, papillary thyroid carcinoma, multinodular goiter and VDR involvement have been researched; as a result, differences were found between the groups in terms of both staining prevalence and staining intensity. This was a statistically significant difference among the three groups (p<0.05). A statistically significant correlation was not detected between age and gender with staining intensity and staining prevalence. As a result, VDR is detected in thyroid papillary carcinomas multinodular goiter and normal thyroid tissue in this study. In this study, VDR involvement level of papillary thyroid carcinoma is higher than multinodular thyroid tissue and normal thyroid tissue taken from corpses, so this implies VDR may be an important factor papillary thyroid carcinoma pathogenesis.
