Abstract (EN)
This thesis study aims to introduce Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's spaces in Istanbul. Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey and the implementer of the reforms, is a leader who has written his name in world history with his actions. His thoughts still guides the Turkish society. As well as his actions and reforms, the places where he left his mark play an important role in earning national consciousness and social belonging. Spaces have an important role in collective memory because they preserve the spirit of the past and reflect it to present. In this context, each place where Atatürk resided or visited in Istanbul has an importance in the time period of Turkish national history that keeps the memory of historical events alive. Atatürk's relationship with Istanbul started at the Military Academy, where he enrolled for his higher education. It ended with his death in Dolmabahçe Palace. The thesis, covering the years 1899-1938, consists of an introduction and four main chapters. In this context, the concept of "space", which forms the mainstay of this study and the importance of historical places are explained. Military Academy at Harbiye, Akaretler House No. 76, Pera Palace Hotel, Fansalar House, Şişli-Kasapyan House between 1899-1918 and Dolmabahçe Palace, Florya Marine Mansion and Savarona Yacht between 1927-1938 were studied. While the history of the places and Atatürk's activities, contacts, political and social relations are explained in these places, Atatürk's life is also included in outline to avoid any disconnection between the places.
