The ideas and attitudes of museum directors toward the educational functions of museums

In this study, the ideas and attitudes of museum directors toward the educational functions of museums were investigated.The study population included directors of 101 governmental museums under the Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums of the T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism and 141 private museums. Education Scale Of Museology was developed by the researcher and was applied on 7 museum directors under the Directorate General of Cultural Assets and Museums in T.C. Ministry of Culture and Tourism and 43 private museum directorsIn the first part of the scale, demographic variables about museum directors were contained, and their attitudes toward educational functions of museums were presented in the second part.Screening models which are individual and relational were used in this study. Answering the questions with frequency analysis of the situation was discussed. Factor analysis and variance analysis was applied to investigate the relations between dependent and independent variables.Four factors of the scale were obtained as a result of factor analysis. These factors are as follows:Factor 1: Attitudes toward museums as integrated parts of the curriculumFactor 2: Attitudes toward the competency in the use of museums for educational purposesFactor 3: Attitudes toward museums as educational institutionsFactor 4: Attitudes toward the need for an educational reform for effective use of museums.T-test and variance analysis on the all of the questions evaluated the results is not significantly. The Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis test results demonstrated that, gender of the directors predicted for their attitudes, significantly. A significant difference between the some attitudes of the directors in public and private museums was also observed.
