Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of 5E model on the students? musical learning levels, attitudes toward music lesson and levels of recall of knowledge in the music lessons at elementary school. For this aim, this research employed semi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group. Socio-cultural and economical conditions and class sizes of the schools were taken into consideration while choosing the schools that would be used in the experimental study. Thus, the research was conducted with the participation of totally 119 students from two primary schools under the Ministry of National Education in Ankara, in the second semester of 2009-2010 Academic Years. Of these students, 61 were included in experimental group and 58 were in control group. In the study, a three-week practice was followed in consistent with the topic ?I am learning the major, minor scales and Turkish modes in music? and the gaining of the 7th grade music lesson in the Primary School Music Lesson Educational Curriculum. During the practice, the lessons for the experimental group were taught using the activities developed by the researcher according to the 5E model, whereas the lessons for the control group were presented using the teaching methods stated in the 2006 Teacher Guide of Music Teaching Curriculum.Various measurement instruments were used for identifying sub-hypotheses of the study and for collecting data from the students assigned in the research. In order to evaluate the gaining of the students on the topic ?I am learning the major, minor scales and Turkish modes in music? and the levels of their recalling these gaining, Achievement Test on the Topic of ?Major, minor scales and Modes in Music? was developed and applied. ?Scale for Attitudes toward Music Lesson? was utilized for assessing the attitudes of the students toward this course. `Attitude Scale Toward Music Lesson? was developed by Özmentaş and the coefficient of reliability for the scale according to Cronbach Alpha is found .86 for a one factor consisting of 20 items. Moreover, to explore the opinions of the students in the experimental group about the practice of 5E model, `A Form for the Views of the Students? was used. While analyzing the obtained data, of the parametric tests, dependent and independent group t-tests and split file Anova test were used, and of the non-parametric tests, Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test were used for the data with normal distribution. .05 significance level was preferred for evaluating statistical significance. As a result of the study, it was revealed that there was significant difference between the students in the experimental group to whom 5E model was applied and the students in the control group to whom activities in the 2006 Teacher Guide of Music Teaching Curriculum were applied, in terms of their achievement in music lesson, their attitudes toward music course and the levels of recalling their learning. Considering the results of the tests implemented, it was found that the levels of academic achievement and recalling were higher for the students of experimental group taught with 5E model than for the students of control group for whom current teaching methods were used. Furthermore, in the study, it was revealed that 5E model caused positive influence on the primary school students? interest and participation in the music course. These findings are consistent with the data obtained from the interview forms made with the students in the experimental group.
