The prediction of the big five personality traits of music teacher candidates on instrument self-efficiency (Aegean Region example)

This study aims to examine the prediction the big five personality traits of music teacher candidates on their instrument self-efficacy. The research is in the correlational survey model. Students studying at the music education departments in the Aegean Region of Turkey form the research population. The sample of the research was carried out in the departments of music education in Muğla, Denizli, Aydın, and Ġzmir provinces of the Aegean Region, and it was conducted with the first, second, third, and fourth grade students studying in these departments. In line with the purpose of the research, the research data was collected through the "Self-Efficacy Scale of Instrument Performance" developed by ġeker (2016); "Big Five Personality Factor Inventory" developed by John, Donahue, and Kentle (1991) and adapted into Turkish by Karaman, Doğan, and Çoban (2010); and a "Personal Information Form" prepared by the researcher. Frequency, descriptive, one-way variance (ANOVA), independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression analysis were used in the study, and the data were analyzed with the SPSS 12.0 package program. The instrument selfefficacy status of the music teacher candidates was determined as 5.54 out of 10 points according to the results obtained from the research, and this situation was interpreted as slightly above the average. It was determined that in the instrument self-efficacy scale, the self-efficacy and psychological indicators had the highest mean, whereas the lowest mean was in the self-inadequacy sub-dimension. At the same time, it was found that the instrument self-efficacy scale had significant positive relationships with instrument solo performance and instrument grade means. On the other hand, when the findings from the five large personality factor inventory are examined, it was determined that the openness, compatibility, self-control, and extraversion sub-dimensions respectively had the highest means; and the lowest mean score was in the neuroticism sub-dimension. In addition, it is concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship at p, 05 level between openness personality trait and the average grade while there is a positive significant relationship between extraversion, self-discipline, and openness personality traits and solo performance at p <.05 level. When the relationship between the five major personality traits of music teacher candidates and their instrument self-efficacy was examined, a positive relationship at p <.05 level was found between extraversion, compatibility, and self-control sub-dimensions and the feeling of self-efficacy and psychological indicators that are the sub-dimensions of the feeling of self-adequacy self-efficacy scale. At the same time, it was found that the neuroticism sub-dimension had significant positive relationships with the instrument self-efficacy scale and selfinadequacy at the level of p <.05, whereas it was determined that the personality trait of openness had significant positive relationships with the instrument self-efficacy scale, the self-sufficiency of the scale, and the psychological indicators sub-dimensions at the p. In addition, it was concluded that there was a significant negative relationship at the level of p <.05 between openness personality trait and the feeling of self-inadequacy. In accordance with the purpose of the study, it was concluded that although there are significant relationships between the big five personality traits and the instrument selfefficacy of the music teacher candidates, the big five personality traits predicted the musical teacher candidates' instrument self-efficacy at a non-significant low level.
