Investigation of the relationship between music teacher candidates' music performance anxiety and individual instrument performance exam anxiety

The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between music teacher candidates' music performance anxiety and individual instrument performance exam anxiety. The sample of the study was 467 (288 female, 179 male) undergraduate students (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 4+ grade students) studying in the Department of Music Education at the Faculty of Fine Arts Education at Aksaray University, Balıkesir University, Gaziosmanpaşa University, Harran University, İnönü University, Mehmet Akif Ersoy University and Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, in the Spring Semester of the 2018-2019 Academic Year. As the data collection tools in the study, the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory "KMPA-I" developed by Kenny, Davis, and Oates (2004) and adapted to Turkish by Özevin-Tokinan (2013) and the Individual Instrument Performance Exam Anxiety Scale "IIPEA-S" developed by Dalkıran, Baltacı, Karataş, and Nacakcı (2014) was used. For the analysis of the data, firstly, the distribution of normality was examined, and non-parametric statistical techniques were used to analyze the data since the p value is less than .05. Accordingly, Mann-Whitney U test for "gender" and "type of high school graduated ", Kruskal-Wallis H test was used for comparison of "university", "class", "individual instrument type", "individual instrument success", and "academic success" in the comparison measurements made by the participants regarding the scores of Kenny Music Performance Anxiety and Individual Instrument Performance Exam Anxiety in terms of demographic variables. The correlation between Music Performance Anxiety and Individual Instrument Performance Exam Anxiety was examined with the Spearman Brown correlation coefficient, and it was determined that there was a moderate positive significant relationship between the two variables. According to the results obtained in terms of demographic variables, it was determined that music teacher candidates' musical performance anxieties and individual instrument performance exam anxieties differ significantly in terms of gender variable. It was found that the anxiety levels of female teacher candidates were higher than the anxiety levels of male teacher candidates. In terms of the type of high school graduated, no significant difference was found on both scales. According to the results obtained in terms of individual instrument variable, a significant difference was found in both scales. In this context, according to the "Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory", this difference is observed in the music teacher candidates playing with plucked instruments (ud, baglama, and guitar) and clarinet, and the music teacher candidates playing the guitar and clarinet instruments for the "Individual Instrument Performance Exam Anxiety Scale"; as a result, it was determined that the candidates of music teachers who have trained instrument and clarinet training for both scales have lower anxiety level. For individual instrument success and academic achievement variables, significant differences were found in the "Individual Instrument Performance Exam Anxiety Scale". In terms of university and class variables, no significant difference was found on both scales. In addition, the effect size calculations were made for variables with significant differences (gender, individual instrument, individual instrument success and academic success). The results obtained in the research were discussed, evaluated and some suggestions were made within the framework of the literature.
