The comparison of homophobia and violent tendencies in young adults with and without narcissistic traits

Narcissistic personality traits are an important phenomenon that affects the individual's internal and relational dynamics with other people. It can be said that prejudiced, discriminatory and violent attitudes and approaches towards socially disadvantaged groups pose a significant threat to public health. In this respect, it is important to conduct research that examines the relationship between narcissistic personality traits and homophobia level and aggression tendency, and that narcissistic personality traits predict homophobia and aggression tendencies. The aim of this study is to compare the participants with high narcissistic personality traits and low narcissistic personality traits and examine them in the context of homophobia and aggression tendencies. Another aim of the study is to investigate the predictor of narcissistic personality traits to homophobia and aggression tendencies. The sample of the study consists of 100 volunteers residing in Turkey, between the ages of 25-40, divided into two groups as "high narcissistic personality traits" and "low narcissistic personality traits" according to the level of narcissism. An informative text about the research was presented to the participants, and then consent for participation was obtained. Then, Sociodemographic Information Form, Narcissistic Personality Inventory -16, Hudson Ricketts Homophobia Scale and Buss-Perry Aggression Test were applied. According to the analysis results of the research; A statistically significant difference was found in participants with high narcissism level in terms of homophobia level and aggression tendency (p< 0.05). In addition, a statistically significant and positive correlation was found between the level of homophobia and the tendency to aggression in the participants with a high level of narcissism (p = 0.004; r=0.530). While there was no statistically significant difference between the participants with high narcissistic personality traits level and low narcissistic personality traits level according to gender, age and province of residence (p> 0.005), a significant difference was found according to educational status (p= 0.001). It was determined that high narcissism level predicted homophobia by 33% and aggression tendency by 44%. It is recommended that narcissistic personality traits and other personality traits be taken into account when examining the homophobia level and aggression tendencies of individuals in clinical interviews and social studies.
