Evaluation of serum brain derivated neurotrophic factor level in patients with and without nasal septum deviation and concha hypertrophy

Objective: Nasal congestion is one of the most common complaints of patients who apply to the otorhinolaryngology outpatient clinic, and the main cause of nasal obstruction is deviation of the middle part of the nose (septum) and hypertrophy of the turbinates. In the case of nasal congestion due to this, airway resistance becomes more severe and this causes chronic oxygen deficiency (hypoxia). Nasal congestion is a common public health problem with a prevalence of 70% in different studies. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to prevent neuron degeneration and provide behavioral improvement. It has been shown in previous studies that nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy cause chronic hypoxia and consequently increase the serum total oxidant level and decrease the antioxidant level, and cause right and left ventricular dysfunction, but its effect on the BDNF level has never been studied. The refore, the importance and severity of nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy can be better understood. Method: Forty-four patients and 44 control groups, who applied to the otolaryngology outpatient clinic, were diagnosed with nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy, and had indications for septoplasty surgery, were included in the study. Patients under the age of 18 and over the age of 50 were not included in the study. The excess blood samples taken from the peripheral veins of these patients were first allowed to clot for 20-30 minutes at room temperature, and then centrifuged at 4000 rpm for 10 minutes, and the serums separated into eppendorfs were stored at -80 degrees. At the beginning of the test, the samples were brought to room temperature. The BDNF value was applied according to the test principle of the commercial elisa kit. The kit materials were used in accordance with the steps specified in the booklet, and the color change rate of the substrate after reacting with the antibody-bound enzyme was measured in the spectrophotometer, and BDNF results were found. Statistical analyzes were calculated with SPSS 23.0. Calculated results are given as mean and standard deviation (+/-). The results were evaluated with the Shapiro Wilk measurement method, and normal values were evaluated using parametric (t-test) and non-normal values were evaluated using non-parametric tests (Man Whitney U test), and power analysis was repeated at the end of the study. Results: In our study, control-patient and male-female BDNF levels and mean age were evaluated in patients with and without nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy. The BDNF levels of the patient group were lower than those of the control group, and a significant difference was found between the patient and control groups. No significant difference was found in male-female BDNF and age levels. Conclusion: The lower serum BDNF level in patients with nasal septum deviation and turbinate hypertrophy disease suggests that BDNF may be associated with these diseases. The BDNF levels of the patient groups were not evaluated after surgery.
