An analysis on Necip Fazil Kisakurek's theatre

The majority of analyses in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature are dedicated to poetry and novels. The theses and other academic papers on theatre as a literary genre are few. One of the main reasons is that theatre is mostly seen as a stage art. However, every script written to be staged, is at the same time a literary text. The analysis of these texts from the literary point of view will undoubtedly contribute to the development of script as an important part of theatre art and to the comprehension of theatre history. One of the important figures of the Republican period in Turkish literature, Necip Fazil Kisakurek is mostly known as a poet and a thinker. The biggest part of the investigations on him is dedicated to these two aspects. Apart from that, Necip Fazil created works in other literary genres. In his creative heritage theatre scripts take the second place after poems. There are seventeen of them, two remained unfinished. The analyses on his theatre are both insufficient in number and far from being fundamental and systematic. The focus of the present analysis is the evolution of Necip Fazil's theatre and his views on the art of theatre. The sources of his theatre are investigated and his seventeen plays are analyzed from the structural and thematical point of view. Thus, the characteristic features of Necip Fazil's theatre are determined.
