The language of sehl-i mümtenî in Nedîm

Divan literature, which has an important place in the history of Turkish literature, has been the subject of many studies with its personalities and the works they have produced. The divans of the poets have been examined and annotated in terms of literary art and verse forms. In this thesis, the art of sehli mumtenî, which is one of our literary arts but is not processed as much as other arts, has been discussed. In the preliminary study, in determining the sehli mumtenî; simplicity, ease of use, brevity and easy comprehensibility were found. Since these given criteria are based on personal opinions, in order to present a more concrete criterion, the questions of which phonetic, morphological, semantic and syntactic possibilities of the language were utilized and as a result of these possibilities, "whether the art of sehli mumtenî could be based on formulas were sought". Nedîm's divan was chosen as the limiting work for this study. The divan of Ahmet Nedîm , one of the leading poets of the Tulip Era, was first scanned and the couplets that we thought bore the traces of sehli mumtenî were annotated by considering all their elements. Then, it was tried to formulate how Nedîm used the elements of the language while performing his art of sehli mumtenî in terms of phonetics, morphology, semantics and syntax. As a result of the findings, the questions of "are there any criteria for sehli mumtenî, how is the language shaped while performing this art" were tried to be answered. When we look at the selected couplets, we see that Nedîm's couplets are well-known and even accepted as berceste verses. The fact that the verses that are remembered more from the divan are seen in the view of sehli mumtenî shows that the beauty of expression, harmony, comprehension and easy memorization are also effective in sehli mumtenî. In addition, Nedîm's placing of life in the world of poetry to this extent, establishing similar relationships between the two and processing them in his couplets, has built examples of sehli mumtenî. The clear words, aphorisms and allusions in the couplets create depth and subtlety of meaning, and aim to leave an impression on the reader. Nedîm, who successfully transferred the crafts of the period to the world of poetry, has captured sehli mumteni with the unprecedented beauty of meaning he has created in these couplets.
