Improving mechanical properties of a non breathable polyethylene film

Abstract (EN)

The non-breathable films are frequently used in especially disposable diapers for baby and adult. The non-breathability means a barrier property against the water vapor and liquid permeability. However, it causes some issues at the next production phases and during customer practice because of the insufficiency of mechanical properties. It also leads to increase industrial waste for each phase. It has some risks in terms of quality continuity. As an outcome of the project, we planned to provide added economic value since it decreases the waste. Raw materials used in the project were chosen with better mechanical properties and were evaluated from the point of processability. Recipes were obtained by mixing raw materials in various ratios. Firstly, mixtures containing high density polyethylene (HDPE) and calcite with a particle size of 1, 2 and 3 µ were prepared at twin screw extruders, also trail was made at cast film line. Later, mixtures containing linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and calcite with various particle sizes were prepared and trail was made at blown film line. After the test results were examined, it was observed that mixtures containing calcite with a particle size of 1µ have the best mechanical properties. After that, mixtures containing low density polyethylene (LDPE) and calcite with a particle size of 1µ were prepared and trail was made at cast film line. After the test results were analyzed, it was noticed that the trial which was occurred at blown film had better mechanical properties than the trials that occurred at cast film line. Mechanical values desired in film were reached by using compound containing 1µ calcite and by producing film with blown film line.
